Website access and hosting
When you open the website, the hosting provider may process technical connection information so that pages can be delivered securely. This may include your IP address, access date and time, requested page, browser or device information, amount of data transferred, and referring page.
For processing subject to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), our legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (our legitimate interest in a safe and reliable website). The hosting provider may act as a processor under Article 28 GDPR.
Hosting provider: Webspace-Verkauf.de ISP e.K., Lichtenfelser Strasse 17 a, 96271 Grub am Forst, Deutschland
Cookies, analytics, and outside links
This static home page does not itself load third-party analytics, advertising pixels, external web fonts, or non-essential cookies. Individual book campaign pages may use a signup form or other third-party services, which must be assessed separately.
Our website may link to Amazon or other third-party pages. Only after you follow an external link do you visit that provider's website; their privacy policies then apply.
We will update this policy and obtain consent where required before introducing additional non-essential tracking or similar technologies.
When you contact us
If you email or otherwise contact us, we use the details you provide (such as your name, email address and message) to handle your request and respond. Where GDPR applies, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) (taking steps at your request or fulfilling an agreement) or Article 6(1)(f) (legitimate interest in replying to inquiries), depending on the circumstances.
We keep these records only for as long as needed to address the inquiry, subject to legal retention obligations.
Reader-copy requests and book feedback
When you ask to participate in a reader-copy or book feedback program, we may collect your name, email address, the title or topics you are interested in, the date of your request, and related communications. We may also retain feedback you voluntarily choose to provide so we can improve our books.
If a particular program involves shipping a physical book or reimbursing eligible expenses, we may also process the shipping, payment and documentation details necessary for that purpose. We do not need such details for every request.
Where GDPR applies, the relevant legal bases may include Article 6(1)(b) (handling a participation request or agreement), Article 6(1)(f) (administration, preventing misuse, and dealing with questions), and Article 6(1)(c) (legal obligations such as retaining accounting records).
Important: Requesting a copy for one book does not automatically sign you up for promotional emails about future books. Marketing messages require their own applicable legal basis, including consent where required. Providing feedback is voluntary.
Email updates and CleverReach
We use CleverReach GmbH & Co. KG, Schafjückenweg 2, 26180 Rastede, Germany, to manage email lists and send certain messages about books, reader programs, and — when requested — future offers or updates. You can find the provider's privacy information at cleverreach.com. We must have an appropriate data processing agreement with this provider when it processes personal data on our behalf.
Depending on your interaction with us, we may store your email address, first name, signup and confirmation timestamps, evidence of consent, selected interests, book or campaign identifiers, and mailing-list tags. We use these details to send the communications you requested and, where appropriate, tailor them to your chosen interests.
Optional marketing emails: If you subscribe to future book news or promotional messages, where GDPR applies we rely on Article 6(1)(a) (consent). We use a double opt-in process: after signup, you receive a confirmation email and are added to the promotional mailing list only after confirming. Technical records may be kept as evidence of signup and consent.
Messages about a requested program: Messages necessary to organize a reader-copy request may be sent independently of a marketing subscription, based on Article 6(1)(b) GDPR where applicable. This does not automatically authorize unrelated promotional messages.
Unsubscribing: You can withdraw marketing consent at any time using an unsubscribe link included in marketing emails or by contacting us. Withdrawal applies to future processing; a minimal suppression record or consent record may be retained where necessary to document compliance.
For US recipients, commercial marketing emails must also follow applicable CAN-SPAM requirements, including a valid physical mailing address and a functioning unsubscribe process.
Service providers and other platforms
We share information only where needed for the purposes described here or where another lawful basis applies. Recipients may include hosting and email providers, and — if a program requires it — shipping or payment service providers.
If you contact us through social media or take part in a survey hosted by a third-party service, that platform may also process your information under its own privacy terms.
International visitors and data transfers
Happy Hoot is operated from Germany. If you visit from the United States or another country, information you provide may be received and handled in Germany and by the service providers described in this policy.
Where data subject to the GDPR is transferred to a recipient outside the European Economic Area, we apply a lawful transfer mechanism if required, such as an adequacy decision or appropriate contractual safeguards.
How long information is kept
We keep information only as long as necessary for its purpose or as required by applicable law. Reader-program information is generally removed after the program and any necessary follow-up or documentation periods have ended. Email marketing details are used until you unsubscribe or withdraw your consent, subject to limited compliance records.
Technical server logs are kept according to the hosting retention period listed above. Legally required business, tax, or accounting records may be retained longer.
Your privacy rights
Under the GDPR, where applicable and subject to the statutory conditions, you may have rights to access, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection to certain processing (Articles 15–21). If processing is based on consent, you can withdraw it at any time for the future.
You may also lodge a complaint with a competent EU/EEA data protection supervisory authority. For our German establishment, this includes the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
For US residents: Depending on whether a relevant state privacy law applies to our activities, you may have additional rights. Please contact us using the details above to make a request. This statement does not mean every state privacy law automatically applies to our small German publishing business.
We do not sell personal information or use cross-context behavioral advertising pixels on this static home page.
Security and changes to this policy
When you access this website using HTTPS, information is encrypted in transit between your browser and the site. We also use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards suited to the information we handle.
We may update this policy if our website features, service providers, or legal obligations change. The version published on this page is the current one.
